In Between Times

There is a certain feeling of restlessness and anxiety that emerges in liminal times. Liminality being the process of transition between varying states, boundaries, times and borders. It is, put simply, an in between time. Not quite here or there. It is the transition between night and day, waking and sleeping, midday and midnight, it is the solstice and the equinox. There is liminality in the transition between seasons and even the stages of our lives. Traditional spiritual practices understand the strange and sometimes disquieting nature of liminal times. They are often associated with increased spiritual activity and receptivity. Prayers and rituals are often held to mark these times. In some cultures certain activities were either encouraged or prohibited during liminal times. And this is something many of us have lost touch with; we have lost the rituals that ground the human experience, the rituals that link us to our ancestors and descendants. Rituals that imbue sacrality into the profane, that allow us to escape the material and access the transcendent.
