Bear witness

There is much suffering in the world, around us and in our lives, helplessness is paralyzing, yes but turning away is monstrous, not because you are not helping, we often cannot help, but in acting like it doesn’t exist or doesn’t matter you diminish your own humanity. And when the inevitable moment comes where you are able to do something, however small, a lifetime of ignoring will render you unable or even worse unwilling, making a dry, twisted gnarled thing of your heart.  The least and the most you may ever be able to do is be a witness to it all.

I saw in a documentary a homeless man say that the worst pain he experienced while living on the street was being ignored, not the ridicule or the violence, not the cold damp that settled into his bones, not an empty stomach eating itself from the inside out, but to be deemed not even worthy of a nod, a smile, eyes looking into eyes. Less than nothing.
